Brand Spotlight: Kosmatology

We are back with our Brand Spotlight blog series where we dig a little deeper into each of our brands and connect with the founders behind the products! Next up...Kosmatology. Kosmatology was founded by Dr. Janis Covey. She was inspired to start formulating products when her youngest child developed Eczema at 3 months old. Unhappy with the treatment options available, Janis, a compounding Pharmacist, started making her own products and the rest is history. When we discovered Kosmatology, we fell in love with the clean ingredients and fresh, plant-based scents like Botanical Bliss & Goody Goody Grapefruit. Popular products with both children and adults, read through to learn more about one of our favorite brands:

What was your background before starting Kosmatology?

Prior to starting Kosmatology, I was a compounding pharmacist.  I have a Doctorate in pharmacy and worked in pharmacy for 15 years.

What was the first product you developed?

The Goody-Goody Grapefruit Lotion Bar. My journey into clean skincare began when my younger daughter, Cameron, developed eczema at 3 months old.  Trips to the pediatrician only resulted in prescriptions for topical corticosteroids. As a compounding pharmacist, I was aware of the side effects of potent corticosteroid creams and wanted a more natural remedy.  Using my knowledge as a compounding pharmacist, I created what is now known as the Goody-Goody Grapefruit lotion bar. My daughter has been eczema free for 9 years only using this product. After my results with Cameron, I went on to create a clean skincare line for the entire family.

Where does the name Kosmatology originate from?

Funny story!  My maiden name is Kosma.  After the grapefruit lotion bar was developed and friends and family started asking me to make it for them, my brother started calling me “Kosmatology” as a joke.  When I decided to start the skincare line, Kosmatology just felt like the right fit.

What does clean/green/non-toxic mean to you?

To me it means being able to read the label and know what is in the product.  I like ingredients to be as close to nature as possible such as Shea butter and olive oil; no need to use manmade chemicals when we have such powerhouses found in nature.

How do you come up with the scents for the products?

I always work with organic essential oils.  I love to blend them together to create great scents. From time to time, I do receive requests for scents, such as pumpkin and blueberry, and I have to explain that there is no natural way to create those scents.

How do you choose and source your ingredients?

Lots of research!  I source ingredients from companies who care about the environment and I always use sustainably sourced as well as organic.

What do you feel distinguishes you from other brands?

The fact that the products are for the entire family and they are affordable.

What is your go to product from the line?

Definitely, the lotion bars!  With the current cold temperatures in Connecticut, I have been reaching for the lotion bars to keep my skin nourished and moisturized.  My current favorite is the Herbal Fresh; the spearmint-rosemary scent has been very uplifting during the cold, dark winter months.
